-Now, Onto the Actual Review-

Hello, I’m The Detective Librarian and man, it’s been a while since I last did a review of anything related to “Sonic the Hedgehog”!! Still, the newer ones “SUCK”, while the older ones “ROCK”!!!!! Also, this year is Sonic’s 25th Anniversary, since his first game that was released in 1991!!!!!!!

EVERYONE: *Cheering*

THE DETECTIVE LIBRARIAN: Okay, okay, calm down. I know that we all love “Sonic the Hedgehog” and his newer games aren’t as good as the older ones for many, many obvious reasons!!! But, in order to celebrate his anniversary early, we’re gonna be talking about the creation of an animator by the name of “Chakra-X”, that’s right, one of the most popular thing in the “Sonic” fandom, the fan-animated trilogy known as “Sonic: Nazo Unleashed”!! It came out on Newsgrounds by Chakra-X in 2006, the same year of Sonic’s 15th Anniversary/The Same Year Both Two Bad “STH”Games (“Sonic Riders” and “Sonic 06”) Came Out, making it (possibly) ten years to this day. It was based off a mysterious hedgehog-like figure that was seen in a promo for the “Sonic X” anime that looks like this.:

This image contained the words “Nazo” (meaning “mystery” in Japanese) and it looks more like Super Sonic, but with a silver look to him and his eye-shadow, unlike Silver the Hedgehog, of course. When it first came out on the Internet, it was split into three parts/stages, like an actual “Sonic” game would be set up in, “Stages”! So, let’s see why it’s been well-receive in the “Sonic” fandom, by diving right into, “Sonic: Nazo Unleashed”!!

So, the film starts off with opening titles, then onto Angel Island (Knuckles’ home island, where the Master Emerald is), where Knuckles the Echidna (played by his original English voices, Michael McGaharn and Scott Dreier) is doing a monologue the same exact way he did in “Sonic Adventure 1″/”Sonic Adventure (DX)” about how he’s been living on Angel Island for years, while guarding the Master Emerald that has been part of his culture of the Echidna Clan and he’ll do it for the rest of his life. Also, to answer your question and I forgot to mention this earlier, the creator used audio clips from the characters from the games and put them into dialogue of the film and often edited them or morphed them into one line, which is a pretty interesting concept, here. It’s a pretty neat trick, instead of taking so long to find online actors who are good at voicing the original characters, but, I digress. After the monologue, dark, grey clouds start to appear and hover over Angel Island and cause one of the seven Chaos Emeralds that is on the Island near the Master Emerald to have a mysterious-shadow like figure pop out of the Emerald and steal the Master Emerald from Knuckles. The mysterious figure is actually our title character and main villain of the film, Nazo (played by the film’s creator, Chakra-X) and when he steals the Master Emerald and the other Chaos Emeralds, it (of course) causes Angel Island to fall to the ground in a desert. Meanwhile, we then cut to Metropolis from “Shadow the Hedgehog”, where Nazo appears and steals a Chaos Emerald from a jewelry store, before he sends a destructive ball-like blast to destroy Metropolis. The entire disaster is brought up as a news report on TV about the mysterious figure and everyone decides that Nazo is NOT our other title character, Sonic the Hedgehog (played by Ryan Drummond), and they won’t do the same exact thing when they thought that Shadow the Hedgehog was Sonic back in “Sonic Adventure 2 (Battle)”. It still is a very idiotic move that someone might have been colorblind during that time and was too stupid to tell the difference between two unalike hedgehogs that have different colors and personalities!!!!!!!!!:

Meanwhile, we see Sonic BFF’s, Miles Prower/Tails (played by his voice from “SA1”, Corey Bringas & Connor Bringas) and Knuckles, rush to Sonic, who is speeding along the desert/zone as usual and explain the recent events to him and about the Master Emerald being stolen. He decides to have him and his friends go look for the Master Emerald and the Chaos Emeralds, while solve the mystery on what’s been going on, recently. They eventually locate the Emeralds, then Nazo shows up and attacks our heroes, while Knuckles fights back, before activating his Hyper Knuckles powers from “Sonic 3” and Sonic attempts to rebel as well, but to no avail. As Nazo is about to kill Sonic with his blast-like powers, Shadow the Hedgehog arrives (played by David Humphrey) and saves Sonic’s life, just for the sake of getting the one thing he always gets to activate his powers when he’s in the older games, “The Chaos Emeralds”. He and Nazo (OF COURSE) have a duel with each other and have a little reference to the “Shadow the Hedgehog” game by having Shadow nearly shoot Nazo in the head with his gun, much to the annoyance of Sonic.

But, as soon as that happens, Nazo pushes Shadow so hard that Shadow hits one of the desert/canyon’s rocks and loses the Chaos Emerald. Nazo then gets struck back by Tails from a gun-like device as he’s about to kill Sonic, before then (GET READY FOR THIS) shooting Tails with his blast……………………………………………………….:

I know, Tails actually died, this time!!!! And I thought that “Shed 17” and “Sodor: The Dark Times” killed my childhood, except that “Sodor: The Dark Times” was emotional, while “Shed 17” was both terrifying and traumatizing for many “Thomas” fans like me!!! But (again), I digress, as Sonic is very horrified, angry, and upset over Nazo harming/killing his friends that he uses his anger as negative energy for the Emeralds to transform into “Dark Super Sonic” from “Sonic X”. He then, filled with extreme rage, attacks Nazo by punching him multiple times, but fails, until he realizes that he needs to let go of his anger and use the Chaos Emeralds to turn into his “Super Sonic”-state, which is pretty much the same thing as avenging your friends, but without having anger inside your heart. After a bunch of minutes of physical attacks, Nazo easily manages to defeat Sonic, before Shadow rises from his consciousness and transforms into his “Super Shadow”-state and the fight continues. After Sonic collects more rings that helps him charge up like fuel to turn into his Super-form and he helps Shadow get more rings and use speed-tricks to defeat Nazo, while Knuckles regains consciousness and Tails, somehow is brought back to life by some type-of Chaos energy and they witness the battle between Nazo, Sonic, and Shadow. When Sonic decides the only logical way to defeat Nazo for good is to fly to outer space and kick him in the head and send him crashing down to Earth, creating a giant hole in the ground, and like in most “Sonic” games, the Super-Hedgehog Duo are given an “A” ranking for defeating Nazo.

They soon turn back to normal when Sonic reunites with his resurrected friends. But, wouldn’t you know it, we have one more stage to watch when it turns out that Nazo survived the fall and apparently stole ALL of the Emeralds and heads to Angel Island, causing it to rise back into the sky. Now that the story’s not over yet, it’s up to Sonic and the rest of his friends/rivals to use Chaos Control to get to Angel Island and confront Nazo. When they get there, we have a confrontation between our heroes and Nazo, where Nazo reveals his evil plan and his backstory. It turns out that Nazo was formed from the negativity from the Emeralds and the events from previous “Sonic” games involving the Chaos Emeralds leading up to the events of the story and it was too much for the Emeralds to stop Nazo from forming into his present state. He then uses the Emeralds to commence his plan to have the apocalypse happen and transform himself into his final form, just like Chaos from “SA1”: “Perfect Nazo”!! Sonic and Shadow try to transform into their super forms to fight back, but their attacks leave to no effect on Nazo whatsoever, including when this happens.:

As you’d expect, Perfect Nazo easily defeats Shadow and Sonic under a pile of rubble, leaving Tails and Knuckles the only ones left in the battle. Under the rubble, the unconscious Sonic and Shadow reminiscence about their friends/allies, while Tikal from “SA1” does the chant for the Master Emerald:

“The Servers are the Seven Chaos. Chaos is power, power enriched by the heart. The Controller is the one that unifies the Chaos.”

This causes Sonic and Shadow to get revived again and turn into their hyper powers (unlike Shadow from the 199o’s) from “Sonic 3”: “Hyper Sonic” and “Hyper Shadow”. They then morph together into their Hyper-hybrid body: “Shadic”/Hyper Sonic & Shadow Formed Together!!!!! They then have more fighting, while the “Live and Learn” song plays in the background, until the two of them catch their breath and tension once again rises when Perfect Nazo steals the Chaos Emerald’s energy (except for the Master Emerald’s energy) and gains more power than ever before. We then get more info about Nazo’s history, when Nazo has gained a liking towards working with Chaos Energy and when he continues to evolve, he’ll be even more powerful than any star in the Universe and because the Master Emerald can’t be able to have its power absorbed, Nazo’s REAL plan is to destroy the Earth and cause the Master Emerald and it’s power to shatter into a thousand pieces, making it difficult to find the other pieces to place it back together, again.:

After this, the fight continues and as Shadic/Sonic and Shadow are about to run out of rings, ALL of the other “Sonic” characters that are alive (including his enemies like Dr. Eggman and Metal Sonic) give him/them support by giving them enough rings to grow powerful enough to save the day, while Knuckles and Tails help out into defeating Nazo by transforming into their Super/Hyper powers. Once again, the battle is not over yet when there’s still negative Chaos Energy on the loose in the sky, leaving Shadic to go inside, have Perfect Nazo still be alive, and defeat Perfect Nazo in an epic way with the restored Chaos Emeralds and finally kill him once and for all. The ending is pretty much as you’d expect; the world is saved once again, Sonic and Shadow turn back to normal again, and we have a post-credits scene of Eggman discovering Nazo’s ring-cuff, foreshadowing a cliffhanger for a fan-made sequel by (NOT) Chakra-X, but only someone else.

And that’s pretty much the end of “Sonic: Nazo Unleashed”!! Is it really that good as people claim to be? Well, it is good, but, it’s not that great, sadly. But, it is pretty dang enjoyable from beginning to end. I do praise the animation, action scenes, acting, camera angles, the trick of using dialogue from previous games and turn it into one epic-half-an-hour movie/trilogy, and the lighting. But, it seemed to have a fair-below-average plot, as well as a few unexplained story issues. I’m not giving this film a negative review here, I’m just saying that it’s just not one of my favorite things to watch, even for a “Sonic” fan that only prefers the older games, rather than the newer ones.

Overall, even if this film has faults, it’s still pretty good. The animation was great, the usage of audio dialogue from other games was kinda clever, the action was intense, the lighting is beautiful, and even the acting was great. But, the plot seemed to go in no direction and has issues that need to be rewritten and explained in more, specific detail. But, it’s still fairly enjoyable and I would give it an 8.5/10. I’m The Detective Librarian and– *Beeping Noise* Excuse me.
